Grounding for Anxiety

When you feel anxious, oftentimes your mind quickly races and takes you to far away places. Grounding is a skill that can help bring you back to a present-focused mindset and center you. Try some of these quick exercises when you’re experiencing heightened anxiety:

5 senses grounding: within your immediate environment, list five things you can see, four things you can touch, three things you can hear, two things you can smell, and one thing you can taste. Give detailed descriptions of each thing you list, and keep repeating until you feel a reduction in anxiety.

Grounding with an object: hold a small object in your hand. This can be something like a crystal or a small object in your immediate environment. Describe it in detail. What is the temperature and texture? How does the weight of it feel in your hand? What is the object used for?

Be well.
