“I” Statements

It can be so difficult to communicate when you’re feeling angry or frustrated! We need to learn a better way to clearly communicate what we’re feeling and package our message in a way that allows the other person to be receptive to hearing it. Try starting your statements with “I”…I feel mad…I am angry…I am upset, etc.

Doing this allows you to take accountability for your own feelings. Starting sentences with “you”…you upset me….you made me mad…you always do this, etc, automatically makes the person feel blamed or attacked, which then makes them defensive and they stop listening. You will get a lot further and feel heard when you use your I statements.

Be well.
